Forget-me-nots go on North Somerset tour to raise dementia awareness

Following the successful call for donations of knitted and crocheted forget-me-nots by the Alzheimer’s Society earlier this year, an incredible 20,000 knitted flowers were collected from the public and transformed into a large display, first shown on the Grand Pier, Weston, during Dementia Awareness Week in May.

The knitted forget-me-nots are now going on a tour of libraries across North Somerset to raise awareness of dementia and give more people the opportunity to see this amazing display across the area. Many library users and library knitting groups took part in making the flowers.

The event launches to coincide with World Alzheimer’s day on 21 September, a day on which Alzheimer’s organisations around the world concentrate their efforts on raising awareness about dementia.

The forget-me-nots will be exhibited for two weeks at each of the following libraries:

  • Nailsea Library, Tuesday 20 September – Saturday 1 October
  • Portishead Library, Tuesday 4 October – Sunday 16 October
  • Worle Library, Tuesday 18 October – Monday 31 October
  • Clevedon Library, Tuesday 1 November –Tuesday 15 November

Information on practical local services to help anyone affected by dementia will also be available, alongside libraries’ Reading Well, Books on Prescription dementia collection and Memories Shared reminiscence project.

Alzheimer’s Society support workers will be on hand to offer advice and support on the opening day of the exhibition at each library and a Dementia Friends session is planned at Portishead Library on Tuesday 4 October at 11 am.
